Food Bank

Graduate Teaching Assistants Food Bank is the GTA’s Union initiative to support their members in critical need. Food banks help people to live through the critical times when they have no means to support themselves and/or their families, and need to ask for food supplies from the external sources. It is usually a delicate situation when one realizes that he or she needs to use a food bank. Unfortunately, many graduate students, who are in-between their student and professional lives with tuitions fees and loans to pay off, happen to be in such critical situation. We rely on dignity of our members to judge the state of their situation - the food bank is the last resort for those who need food supplies after trying to get the funds from elsewhere (including family and friends).

The GTA Union Food Bank was launched in November 2006 and is up and running. This initiative is supported by the PSAC Social Justice Fund and Regional Office. The GTA Food Bank is also supported by SOGS (the Society of Graduate Students) at UWO. It is the first functioning food bank for Graduate Teaching Assistants in Canada.
